    how to fix audio problem

    i am a newbie for linux environment. i am using ubuntu 9.04.
    the problem is:
    whenever i play music with headphones plugged in, the music runs in headphones as well as through speakers. so, how can i fix it?

    I personally found Jaunty to be buggy. Your time may be better spent doing a clean install of the new LTS. Go with lubuntu-10.04 if your machine is an older one would be another recommendation.

    Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear. Besides, anyone who uses Linux must become adept at installation.

    Hello and Welcome.
    To me it sounds like the headphone jack is not making good contact with the connector or something like that. Try fooling with the mixer to make sure you don't have any weird settings.

    The other possibility is the computer uses a soft switch and the driver doesn't know it. Sometimes you can fix it with an option.

    What is the computer make and model?
    What is the output of:

    lspci -nnk | grep -iA 2 audio
    and
    aplay -l
