    Ubuntu 10.04 won't boot

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 and immediately had some problems with booting after a restart.

The font changed suddenly during startup, and then the screen flashed, and the logo appeared but then became what I would call pixelated. Then all I got was a black screen and it just hung there.

Did a hard restart and entered the GRUB loader and chose Ubuntu 10.04 kernel 2.6.31-21 instead of Ubuntu 10.04 kernel 2.6.32-22 and it came up with this message which hung there long enough for me to snap a photo:

mount: mounting none on /dev failed: No such device092b3250a
chroot: cannot execute /etc/apparmor/initramfs: No such file or directory.

Then, just as I thought it would hang there forever, it started to fill the screen with commands (yay, it's doing something!!), which I couldn't copy down, and eventually started up and is working fine. However: If I start it up normally it will never never boot. I always have to enter GRUB and choose the other option.

And who knows when this tactic will stop working? Please help!

P.s. there is a video on youtube called "ubuntu computer problem" which I posted, which illustrates this problem.

    Hi and Welcome !

Press Alt+Ctrl+F3 at blank screen. Does it switch to command line mode?

Which Graphics Card do you have?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Intel cards do not create blank screen problem but we have to confirm it first. Check if Ctrl+Alt+F3 works.

    i tried it

    Well I tried Ctrl + Alt + F3 but it didn't work.

Also I noticed that when it shuts down, there are an awful lot of things that the system has to "kill" before it powers down completely.

However, it was having the shutdown problem before I ever touched the 10.04 release.

This is an old laptop which I believe I've had since 2005 and I already replaced the hard drive because it had tons of bad sectors, which is why I installed Ubuntu to begin with.

Thanks for your help though!! =)
