Hi and welcome to the forums.
What video player are you using?
I have found that using VLC to play videos works the best.
You can install it by running the following command in the terminal;
sudo apt-get install vlc
If you still have a problem you can click on the tools button in VLC then codec info to see what video codec the movie is using.
It is also possible that the video is DRM protected and can only be played in Windows.
But usually there is a warning under properties of that file saying it is protected.

i've downloaded VLC and trying to start the wmv and having this error message ..
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "wmal". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
anyone knows ?

How did you install your codecs? Did you install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package? If you have already are these copy protected files?

Copy protection aside, try opening VLC from a terminal and giving us the error output... Today I thought I was having video issues, but when I ran mPlayer from a terminal, it turned out to be a corrupted video file... those results will tell us a good story. (feel free to rename any file "media.wma" if you want, it's not like we're gonna call the DMCA cops on you)

Although VLC can play most any video type, there are some that it may not be able to decode. I'm not familiar with the 'wmal' type. There are times when I have been able to use ffmpeg to transcode one of these to a format such as mpeg2 or mpeg4 that VLC or mplayer can deal with.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
Just remember, Semper Gumbi - always be flexible!

A wmal file is a wma lossless file extension.
Decoded with WMP9 internal proprietary codec.
Only compatible with Windows OS's.
Seems that some users prefer proprietary codecs over free open source codecs like flac.

so ? can i still play the wma ?
i tried to run vlc from terminal i got some strange message but the vlc opened
this is the message when i run vlc through terminal
VLC media player 1.0.2 Goldeneye
[0x9635140] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 4.1.3
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access
libdvdread: Can't stat start
No such file or directory
libdvdnav: vm: failed to open/read the DVD
[0x9989588] access_file access error: cannot open file start (No such file or directory)
[0xb7300900] main input error: open of `start' failed: no suitable access module
this is the message when i tried to open the file
[0x9b37f80] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `wmal'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

you should give kaffeine a shot
think sudo apt-get install kaffeine should do the trick. You will get an error about libdvdcss if you don't install that first.
- 05-13-2010 #10VLC opened properly then tried to navigate to a DVD and open it.this is the message when i run vlc through terminal
VLC media player 1.0.2 Goldeneye
[0x9635140] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.

libdvdnav: vm: failed to open/read the DVD
[0x9989588] access_file access error: cannot open file start (No such file or directory)
[0xb7300900] main input error: open of `start' failed: no suitable access module
Then it errors out that the file or directory is not found.
So what were you trying to open with VLC in terminal mode?
If you tried using the terminal command to open a DVD, you probably put in the wrong path to the DVD.
As I said earlier, Linux is unable to play wmal files.
From the command line you provided it seems you have the restricted codecs installed and should have no problems playing non-DRM protected media files like wmv, wav, mp3, avi, Divx or virtually any other standard codec encoded file.
Try opening VLC normally through the gui and use the open DVD button to navigate to the DVD and see if it plays for you.
No reason it shouldn't.
