Which kernel version to install for Ubantu 10.4?

    Hello Everyone,

I am new to Linux and I am learning Device Driver programming. In the tutorial material they have mentioned to download "main-line” kernel.
I have installed Ubantu 10.4. Now I want to install kernel in that.

Which version of Kernel should be downloaded and installed for Ubantu 10.4?

I would really appreciate if anyone can help me this.

    Regards,

    Hi and Welcome !

Most of distributions use modified kernel specific to distro. mail-line kernel is a vanilla kernel without any distribution specific drivers or modifications.

Download latest stable version, 2.6.33.3 from kernel.org. I think vanilla kernel is available in Ubuntu sources too but I can't confirm it right now.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

This is just a guess but I think it's probably safe to use the kernel and sources that came with Ubuntu..it just has a few extra patches.

Generally, all the kernels from kernel.org would be considered main-line.

Stable is good too -- things are less likely to break.

I haven't checked Ubuntu Sources yet but I am sure that sources provide main-line kernel too. I will have access to Ubuntu box in 3-4 hrs and I will let you know regarding this. As MikeTbob suggested already, its safe and a lot easier to install kernel through Ubuntu Sources.

Regarding kernel.org kernels, latest stable version is best bet.

Ubuntu 10.04 comes with 2.6.32.22, are you having trouble getting something to work with it? Why not just use the one that came with Ubuntu, as stated earlier?
