    [SOLVED] cdrom performance issues

I've been using ubuntu for about a week now and everything is working. Having said that, not everything is working well. I'm have trouble with the performance of my dvdrw when i'm trying to rip a cd. I'm only getting 2x speed, this is a joke right? Don't tell me that's the top speed I can rip at, I should be getting about 20x. Is there some setting that I need to adjust to get this working correctly? And if so, why the hell wouldn't this work out of the box. Do we really need to adjust every little thing by hand, I thought this was the year 2010 not 1990. Anyways, sorry for the rant, just getting frustrated that I have to tweak everything to get it to work. I guess thats supposed to be half the fun though right? Well any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I know one of my LG DVD roms in one of my machines just doesn't work worth a damn with ubuntu. While booting from the ubuntu CD it takes a good 5-10 mins to get to the menu.

Ubuntu works great with my other 4 machines, and opensuse and mint boot nice and face in the wierdo DVD rom. Never did figure out what the deal is, and don't use that machine much.

Maybe it's got some kind of weird incompatibility issue.

It is wierd, it's like the dma isn't turned on but it is. I don't know if there is a section in ubuntu that you can check that or not. If anyone else has an answer it would be much appreciated.

Think I found the issue. I used k3b to rip music the other day and it works great. takes about 4 to 6 minutes to rip cds. So it's not the dvd burner it's the software.
