Issue Installing Ubuntu, Please Help
I have a working dell deminsions, no problems 2gb of ram, all that good stuff running xp. I have an older HP Pavilion with about 1Gb of ram, running windows 98. There were some issues with the partitions and registries and i want to install Linux over it to fix all issues and make it a working computer again. I burnt the ISO as an image on a cd using, Nero. no problems with the cd. I could not get the Hp to recognize the cd, and it wont boot. So i took the HDD out of the HP and put it into my dell. I can get to the Install part of the setup and that's where it goes to just a black screen with a flashing cursor
. I am considering, booting to XP and reformatting the disk, and trying to install it using the HP again. Any Suggestions?

Hi and Welcome !
Which version of Ubuntu are you trying to install?
Does it throw any error message? Have you set CD Drive as First Boot Device in BIOS?I burnt the ISO as an image on a cd using, Nero. no problems with the cd. I could not get the Hp to recognize the cd, and it wont boot.
Which Graphics Cards do you have in both machines? So i took the HDD out of the HP and put it into my dell. I can get to the Install part of the setup and that's where it goes to just a black screen with a flashing cursor .It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

It might not be a bad idea to run md5sum on both the .iso you downloaded and on the actual CD just to make sure there are no errors.

Hmkay so someone recomended to try Xubuntu, which i could get to the partition part of the installation process (in my dell on my HP HDD) I would really like to install this from the HP, is there some kind of command that will start the boot from the cd or would i be better off to instal it in my dell and then putting it into my hp....

I'm not clear on your question.
You want to install to the HP machine right?
I'm not familiar with HP machines but you should be able to get it to boot from the CD drive. Find the startup sequence (within the BIOS) and set it to recognize the CD-ROM drive before the hard disks. That is, as the first boot device.

It looks like both of your machines have different Graphics Cards and Xubuntu installer is not configuring card of HP machine correctly.
We need a bit more info. As I asked earlier, post your Graphics Cards details and error message, if any. Check post #2.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

So rather than see the CD in the drive, the machine just boots up to Windows?
I have never transferred a hard disk with Linux installed to another machine but there will be a completely different architecture and most likely will not work.
Then again... maybe someone who has done this can tell you better.
