The dimming is usually due to the power saving settings.
Does it still look dim when running on AC power instead of the battery??

yep, I have my power plugged in and it is still dim. The weird thing is before I did the updates it was fine, then as soon as I rebooted it was dim.

Might be time to report a bug to the devs.

Is there another way to report bugs for ubuntu other than launchpad? I had issues with uploading my key and that's the only way to report a bug that I can see. Why not just post it on the ubuntu site itself and save all the hassle?

I got it fixed kinda. after doing the updates, it upgraded the kernel to 2.6.31.21 and works great. but the other day there were some more updates and it updated the kernel to 2.6.31.22 and then the lcd was dim again? very stange that from one kernel to another the problem is there and then gone again. but anyways i'm using 2.6.31.21 for now until I can figure out why the 22 version is causing issues. I'll be sure to post what I find and will keep this post open until I can figure it out. thanks for the help.
