Hi,
Can anyone please help??
I am brand new to Linux ( 1 week) , drawn to UBUNTU primarily for EMC2, but beginning to like a lot more than that.
I have an NEC Versa C150 laptop, (256mb memory, 1mb swap) on which I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron).
(This was not as straightforward as I hoped, as I had to search the forums etc to find the solution to 'UBUNTU Painfully slow to install problem'. Which I beleive is down to lack of physical memory, and was 100% solved, as suggested, by booting the 'Live CD' version, then CTRL-ALT-F1, followed by the creation of a 'swapfile', using FDISK, 'mkswap, swapon etc. followed by CTRL-ALT-F7, followed by a Desktop Install. Many thanks to the person who wrote that thread.)
I have run the 'Update manager', and the sofware/system is completely up-to-date.
To the real problem:
Laptop has a Realtek 8139 LAN card, which is currently hard-wired to my router and works OK.
It also has a CISCO Aironet 350 Wireless 802.11b card (Mini PCI I think?). The card chipset is listed by the lspci command, and listed during 'Hardware Testing', but is not working.
My experience of Wireless is limited to Win XP, a simple driver wizard install, and WEP auth. onto my Belkin 54g Router.
I have seached for help on this and I am given to beleive this card should be no problem to Ubuntu. One thread suggested Preferences/Network Configuration, but this option is not in my menus, nor can it be found by a 'Right Click' on the Network Monitor Icon.
I have looked at Installing Drivers, using 'Admin/Hardware drivers', but nothing appears in the list
I have a 'linux install package from CISCO website',
I have setup root login account, with password, opened a terminal window, changed directory to the install package, but cannot get the 'install' script to run using 'sh install'. The script complains about 'not being installed as root'. I tried su etc, but soon got lost.
To add insult to injury I have a similar problem with the sound card, which also does not work. It is supposed to be an Ali 1535+ embedded controller. Audio Codec AD1981A, but lspci lists it as Ali M5451. I have not tried to get this working yet.
I am now totally confused as to what I should really be doing.
