    Question Screenshot Capture problem

    OS: Ubuntu 10.04
    X : Gnome

    Hi,

My problem is a very basic issue and im hoping it is something silly and simple. Currently by taking screen-shots i use the shortcut key : PRTSC buttom "print screen" and it works great. However i am trying to take a screen-shot of an application when clicking on the menu options tab to be included on the screen shot.

    For example :

    - Full screen capture of my web browser is fine BUT if I click on the File menu tab and press the screen-shot key it doesn't capture the screen at all. Is there any way around this? I have installed Ksnapshot and Kgrab and no success. Is the only solution is taking video capture and then taking the screen shots form the video capture? seems a bit too doggy that way?.

    Appreciate any help with this

    Regards,
    Kalid

The best I can do is to use ksnapshot, capture mode 'Window Under Cursor' and with a few seconds delay. Then go to your menu and click it. The menu will drop down, allowing you to wait for the snapshot to be taken. However, if you move the selection to one of the menu items, the 'Window Under Cursor' becomes the menu itself. If you want that, you can slect a menu item, otherwise select only the menu itself. Nested menus then get really complicated to display, unless you use the Full Screen mode. I have done some 'menu-only' window captures, and doctored the images onto captures of the main window, using Gimp.
I think the basis of the problem is that menus and so-on are implemented in X as separate Windows, and there is probably no way of associating the main window of an application with the window(s) used to create menus.

Go to Applications -> Accessories -> Take Screenshot

    Hey rod,

Yes that makes sense then. I will try what you suggested otherwise it just might have to do done as a video record and then screen-shots of the video. Thank you for your help.

I'm not sure if this is any help for what you want to achieve but what I often do is to highlight what I want to copy, right click, copy, and then paste into the word processor. Hope this helps

What I've done before is use KSnapshot with a delay and full screen capture, this way I don't get stuck with a menu only issue. I can later crop the irrelevant parts of the capture with GIMP.

    For Ubuntu + Gnome

Go to Applications -> Accessories -> Take Screenshot

This will allow you to take a screenshot of the current window with a menu active and the mouse pointer over the menu. It is installed by default.
