Hmmm. I don't run it. But I wonder at this statement plus all the stuff pulled in for it.

This package depends on all of the packages in the Ubuntu Netbook system
It is also used to help ensure proper upgrades, so it is recommended that it not be removed.
That being said. you might want to try the below route for a classic gnome desktop.
