    Installing Ubuntu Help

    Hey

I recently installed Ubunutu Notebook Edition on my notebook, and i had dual boot with Windows XP Home.

However i was wondering i could just have Ubuntu as my main OS and just wipe Windows XP Home edition off my harddrive from within Ubunutu and just reinstall Ubunutu to take the whole harddrive?

    Hello and welcome!

Yes, if you want to clear your partition tables and then do a fresh install you can go to a terminal in Ubuntu and enter the following command:

    Code:
    sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1
You should receive a short message about records in and records and out, and then you should be able to reboot with the Ubuntu installation disk in your dvd/cd drive to do your fresh install.

    Hi and Welcome !

Another option : Do not remove Ubuntu. Just delete Windows OS partition(s) and resize Ubuntu partitions to consume whole disk space.

Which version of Ubuntu Notebook edition are you using? Post the output of this
    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l
    * Its small L in fdisk -l.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

So to really use it right delete the windblows stuff and let Ubuntu take over the drive completely and then download the latest Virtual Box Install it and then run root and type in these commands VBOX_USB=USBFS VirtualBox DO IT EXACTLY like you see it here and then install windblows and the 3 SP's and what ever programs you want PLUS don't forget to install the guest additions makes it easy to use USB ports and the CD/DVD player / burner

Format the drive completely ( use windows to format the drive ) when it is finished take the CD out of the drive and INSTALL UBUNTU . . I am running 9.10 right now waiting for 10.10 to come up and then I will change over . .

Moderator's Note : Its Windows OS not Windblows.

There is no need to uninstall/reinstall Ubuntu. Boot up Ubuntu and execute this in Terminal :
    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l
    df -h
    Post output here.

    Execute this
    Code:
    sudo apt-cdrom add
    sudo apt-get update
Install package from CD using apt-get or Synaptic Package Manager.
