[SOLVED] Ubuntu hard drive setup
I recently had a fatal system error with windows so i switched to linux. I followed the installation guide and got Ubuntu running with no problems but it think i could have set it up better. I have a 160Gb hard drive (Which I will call drive A from here on) that i want to install the os itself onto and a 1tb hard drive (drive B) that i want to put my /home folder on. So when i re-install Ubuntu and get to the disk partition page, will it work if i make a 10gb partition, for ubuntu, and a 4gb swap partition on drive A, and then use all the free space on drive B for my /home folder? or does everything have to be on the same hard drive?

Hello and welcome!
That should work, but I'd recommend using a little more space for Ubuntu if space on drive 1 is not an issue. The thing is, it's better to have a bit too much than to be a bit short on down the road.
You might not need so much (or any) swap if you have lots of RAM. That said, some users (myself included) do go ahead and maintain a swap partition even though it's never used.oz

Thanks for the help. How big should i make the partition for the operation system?

10gb is normally enough, but it depends on what you are installing
if you aren't using the first disk for anything except for / and swap, then i would say use all the space, but thats just me
40gb should be plenty, but again it depends on what you are installing

It should initially fit fine on the 10GB that you originally proposed, but like coopstah said above, it depends on what you will do with it as to whether or not it will remain large enough. I usually make mine somewhere between 15GB and 30GB if space isn't an issue, although my current system would fit on about 3GB.
Let us know how it all works out for you.oz
