When will 64-bit Ubuntu be mature for multimedia?

After several clean reinstalls of 10.04 64-bit I am about to give up. Wine is a struggle. Flash is a struggle. Codecs and multichannel sound are a struggle. I just can't get it all to work together. These things was so easy on 32-bit, and now I have used several days struggling and swearing. Can someone give me a hint on whenever this 64-bit multimedia-challenge becomes a little bit easier?

Well, now I have tried Ubuntu Studio 64-bit, but it was just as troublesome. Wine, Flash, Codecs and the rest was just too staggering to get to work, so now I just have to go back to 32-bit, even if it means losing some of my memory. I really hope 64-bit Linux is easier in the future when we really need more than 4G of memory.

    Hello and welcome!

I'm not sure what might be going on with their 64-bit version but you might try it in another distro if their version isn't working properly for you and can't be fixed. I've been using 64-bit for almost two years and haven't had any issues other than a single flash issue about a year ago that was quickly solved. Maybe some of the others here will have some other tips that might help you to get past any issues with Ubuntu 64-bit Linux.

I don't use WINE (nor do I recommend it), but I've not had any issues with codecs or Flash in Ubuntu 64-bit. I just installed most of it with apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras.

Then again, I'm not really a multimedia guy; I just watch YouTube and MPG/WMV movies and listen to MP3s.

i switched to 64 bit 10.04 after I got some hardware that could handle 64bit. I, like Techie Moe, have had no problems with codecs or watching DVDs on my DVDRW or AVI off of pendrive or flash. You sound like your problem might be more graphics driver related than codecs related maybe. Just a guess though.

I would have to agree roky. Video drivers have always been hit and miss. Have you tried to install a different driver version?
