    Ubuntu 10.04 freeze on startup

    Hi,

im a complete noob at linux, but I thought i'd give ubuntu a go. Unfortunately it always crashes on boot, whether its livecd 'try ubuntu' or from an installation(it installs fine) - it gets to the desktop and freezes after a few seconds, I cant login or anything, the mouse and keyboard dont work and the screen just shows the desktop with login.

I'm trying to dual boot with win7 on compaq presario CQ61 (64-bit, AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200)
the disk management in win7 is as follows (5 primary partitions in total):

    system (A primary partition
    C: primary partition (win7)
    then 30gig partition for ubuntu
    then 1.28gb for swap?
    then recovery D:

I realise thats alot of partitions, but the two linux ones were created from one unallocated space on the disk.

i've tried 32 and 64 bit versions, but its always the same problem. Booting into safe mode with or without failsafe graphics mode doesnt help.
I've been trying to get it to work for a few hours now and all I have been able to do is mount the win7 ntfs partition from the command line.

    please help thanks
