    My laptop turns off

My laptop turns off every time I load Linux. I can't figure it out on why it's doing it, but I have yet to load a successful version of Linux. Any idea's on what I could do? Just to be clear. When I go to load the OS on the hard drive from the disk. Maybe five to ten mins after that, while it's load to the hard drive for the first time it keeps turning off.
    Thanks

Well, some more information might be helpful, such as what laptop are you using (including RAM, disc space, etc), and what distributions+versions of linux have you tried?

Try looking in the BIOS for SATA Legacy support, set the drive to Legacy IDE mode if you have that.

I have a Toshiba Satelite labtop, probably made in 2003. It has an Intel Celeron 1400MHz 1.40 GHz, 1.21 GB of Ram. The hard drive is 40 GB. Sorry about that. Thanks for your help

If you are talking about installing to hard disk make sure you are running on mains power as installation will drain a battery almost unbelievably quickly.

Nothing has worked. I'm running XP on it, and got tired of it so I've been trying different Linux's. Right now I trying Ubuntu. But I miss quoted myself, the computer doesn't turn off, it just goes dead. The computer's on and I can hear the fan and everything, but the screen is black. I don't understand it.

It could just be a video problem.
Have you already installed to the HD or are you trying to boot the CD/DVD?

    Likely just a video issue.
Have you loaded up to a LiveCd to see if you can get a GUI?

It's the screensaver kickin in most likely. it kicks in after about 10 minutes. just try moving your mouse every 5 minutes to keep it from kicking in.
