    synaptic won't install

I'm using the latest Ubuntu Mint and Synaptic downloads but refuses to install. I tried sudo apt-get install and the package downloads but then I get a segmentation fault. Update manager and Ubuntu software center both freeze up.

I've tried dpkg --configure apt-get update and apt-get -f install all to no avail. This is my second installation of Mint 64 bit. I read on the Lynx 10.04 LTS pages that ext4 can be problematic for download problems and they actually recommend ext3.So I re-formatted to ext3 and there is no difference. So now what? I'm not installing it again. There is not a single version of Ubu that can stand up to PCLinuxOS 2010 Gnome. I never have any of this grief with PCLOS.

I can't comment on the 64 bit version, but i'm running linux mint 8 32 bit and havn't had any issues with it. I also have ubuntu 9.1 and 10.04 32 bit and havn't had any issues with these either. have you ran the apt-get clean command yet? this may help.

Yes I ran the apt-get clean command amongst others, still no cigar. I might try the 32 bit but if it freezes again I'm junking it and moving on. Thanks.

Opensuse is slowly calling me away from the Ubunt debacle.

no problem. I've used opensuse 11.2 32 bit also but not 64 bit. I've heard of alot of people having issues with 64 bit, especially with drivers. I would stick with 32 bit versions unless you have more than 4 gig of ram, otherwise I really don't see the point in doing this. The speed increase is non existant from what i've seen, so the only reason to have it is for the memmory access.
