    Trouble with unbuntu 8.04 LTS

    hello everyone,

I have problem and would very grateful any advice you could give. I have a dell inspiron mini which came with unbuntu 8.04 LTS mini standard edition pre-insatlled and a recovery disk. However i would like a more accessible OS and have been trying to install windows xp but i can not get past EULA screen. I have tried this with different (new) copies and checked if the buttons involved are working properly they are. i have also tried to make a boot disk for ubuntu following Internet guides but apparently this version does not support that option.

    thanks for any help.

More specific information would help us to help you.
What exactly happens at the EULA screen?
You have tried what with new copies of what?
Which buttons are you referring to?
There is no reason why you would not be able to make a boot disk for Ubuntu 8.04.

    Thanks for the reply yancek

I Apologize for not being clearer in my original post.

What exactly happens at the EULA screen?
I cannot progress beyond it that is all.

You have tried what with new copies of what?
I have tried installing windows xp.

Which buttons are you referring to?
The F8 and Pgup/Pgdn used to progress beyond the EULA agreement.

There is no reason why you would not be able to make a boot disk for Ubuntu 8.04.
I would be very grateful if you could post instructions on this process.

You can use SuperGRUB CD or USB to boot up Ubuntu or any Linux distro. It has options to install Linux and WIndows OS boot loaders.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

hey binux, I think your having issues because your drive is formatted with a linux format, ext2,3, or 4 I would assume, and windows doesn't like this. You should be able to get past the license screen however. If you really want to install windows xp instead of linux then you could burn a live cd and format your drive to something like fat 32 and then try installing windows xp again. I would just resize your drive with a partition editor and make a fat 32 drive. then you can keep ubuntu and install windows xp on the other partition. P.S. when you make your partitions don't forget to make a swap partition of about 1 gig or so. If you need more help on this, just ask.

Lets check partition structure of your Hard disk(s). Boot up from LiveCD of any Linux distro and execute this in Terminal
    Code:
    su -
    /sbin/fdisk -l
    Or
    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l
    Post output here.

    * Its small L in fdisk -l.
