Which version of Ubuntu are you trying to install?
Does machine display anything during startup? Any message? It looks like either Ubuntu installer is not configuring it correctly or display itself is not working fine. Have you tried same installation CD in other machine?
Post your machine's specs here. Which Graphics Card do you have?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
