Question home folder and desktop folder seem to be the same...

I installed lifeograph a few days ago via the Ubuntu software center and i was pretty pleased. However i failed to read the startup screen that appears when it first opens and made new files without setting up passwords for them. I was really frustrated because i had written a very long entry and couldn't open it because it had no password. That's not the problem though, when i closed the screen i was surprised to find that every single file and folder i clicked on was attempting to be opened by lifeograph. I restarted my computer and was happy to find that everything was opening with the correct application. However my entire home folder is on my desktop along with a new folder called Desktop. ~previous version~. When i tried to delete these files off my desktop they were also deleted out of my home folder. My desktop background also went crazy and became blurry and slurred. I undid the deletion of these folders and everything went back to normal. I've been sitting here for 2 hours trying to merge them and copy them and reset them but so far i haven't found a solution. Thank you in advance for your help

    Hi and Welcome !

    Open Terminal and execute this
    Code:
    cd Desktop
    ls -l
    Post output here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

None of file/folder listed in output is configuration file/folder and there aren't any symlinks.
Try to move all files except .desktop to another location.

nothing went wrong, but i don't really see the point of that. i moved everything to my documents, then decided that they would be better in my home folder as they were in the first place. Now i've found that they don't just seem to be the same folder, but they really are the same folder. As i dragged the files into my home folder i could see them appearing on my desktop
