Wireless problem
Hi, I'm trying to connect my Ubuntu 10.04 computer to the wireless at home. It will connect if I delete the saved connection and connect as though for the first time, and will run smoothly for maybe 20 minutes or so, but then it disconnects and will not connect again no matter how many times I try or type in the password. There are no problems with the internet on this computer which uses windows, or on my computer when I use windows on that.
I've checked the saved connection information on Ubuntu against the information when I've connected to the router and it matches, and I've tried changing the lease time. I've also phoned the ISP help line, and they told me my operating system is too old so they can't help and recommended that I update it, although I have Lucid Lynx. The cheek of them! They wouldn't accept when I said it was all up to date and brand new.
Although don't rule either of those out as possible causes, I might have done something wrong
My ISP is Talk Talk if that is needed.
Thanks in advance to anyone that might have a go at solving this!

Ubuntu used to lose the password, but a new iteration of network manager has fixed that. It may be hardware related. I can remember windows settings overriding Ubuntu settings such that the device had to be re-installed in linux.
You might download wicd using the synaptic package manager. It will replace network manager. Possibly a different wifi management process will fix your problem.

I am not a linux expert but I thought I'd ring in. I was using Ubuntu ver 9 and my wireless worked perfectly from the get go. I then downloaded and tried ver 10 and could not get it to work. I found some info on the net that suggested it may be related to Bios. I downloaded and installed the latest Bios for my laptop and everything worked fine after that. Hope this helps...... gb

i have to respond
i inadvertently did a fedora11 -> ubuntu 10.4 over the weekend (i was attempting a dual boot). i had no problems with the wireless. i learned from my fedora experience when i did the router/wireless routine - don't configure, it will connect on its own. (but don't get me started on nvidia/xorg)
i suffer from att. i can't conceive of calling them unless that light goes out on the modem. but at least they are up front with their ignorance.

Hi, thanks everyone for replying.
I forgot to mention that I live away from home during term time and the wireless in my student house works fine with Ubuntu 10.04, so it's probably not a problem with my computer.
Sorry!
