    [SOLVED] 10.04 cant see cd\dvd

Hey guys, I'm back yet again. I'm in 10.04 and just put in a music cd to listen to as i play in ubuntu but its not seeing the cd. I also run ubuntu 9.10 (dual boot) and it worked great right out of the box. Anyone know why this might not be working? I'm trying to use Rhythmbox and nothing...please help!!

Make sure you have all the required codecs.

MikeTbob, thanks for replying. I'm still kinda new to Linux so if you could, please let me know where and how to get the proper codecs. I'm using the HP DVD Writer 940i and i looked it up on the HP site and they have no drivers for linux. I've tried google but my own posts keep coming up...lol. Please help!!???
    again, thanks.
PS When I go into Computer, the CD/DVD is listed but cannot open it at all. its like the cd's or dvd's are blank but when i put in a blank cd or dvd, it sees it just fine

Go to System - Administration menu then to Synaptic Package Manager.
    Search for restricted.
Chose either Ubuntu, Kubuntu or Xubuntu Restricted Extras depending on which distro you are using.
That will install the non-open source codecs you will need to play audio and video files.

TaZMAniac, Thanks for the reply. i followed your instructions and it installed 68 files. unfortunately it still doesn't work. It's like i never put in a cd or dvd at all but when i put in a dvd that has the Ubuntu 10.04 ISO file, or a cd that has my Ubuntu 9.10 ISO file, or any data cd or dvd it sees everything just fine. I've tried other movie dvd's and other music cd's but still nothing. like i said, it's like there isn't anything in the dvd writer at all...any other suggestions?? Anyone???

If you go to Places - Computer is the Cd/DVD device listed there?
You can also go to System- Administration and click on Disk Utility.
The Cd/DVD should also be listed in there.
If it is, insert a Cd or DVD and see if the status changes from empty to media inserted.

Also go to Users and Groups under Administration.
Choose your user name and click on Advanced settings.
Enter your password. Click on the User Privileges tab.
Scroll down the list and make sure your user has rights to access the Cd Rom.

Is this all of your DVD's/CDs or just some of them? (Don't try them all unless you have a lot of spare time as what I am really asking is; have you tried a few?)

Just had a look around the tubes:

A lot of people are reporting that this issue is fixed by going into the bios at boot and changing the boot order such that the cd is second after the first hard drive.

It seems odd but there you have it.

    Another person suggested this...

    1. make link from /cdrom to /media
    (sudo ln -s /cdrom/ /media/)
    2. add line like this in /etc/fstab
    (/dev/sr0 /media/cdrom udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0)
    3. reboot your computer, rest ubuntu fix self

Again i want to thank everyone for their responses, it is so greatly appreciated.
TaZMAniac: yes, the cd/dvd is listed in both places. I just tried another dvd and the title of the movie did come up, something that hasn't happened before but when i try to PLAY I got the message about there being no "demux for MRL (not sure exactly about the MRL because now after rebooting is doesn't see any dvd or cd in the drive. I think maybe its my cd/dvd writer. maybe its just going bad?? Although i just this second put my ubuntu 10.04 dvd in and it sees it just fine......sigh......Will keep trying until I get it.
    Again thanks to all
