I would expect you to have problems with low RAM (256MB). Not sure I understand your problem. Did you successfully complete the installation? Were you ever able to boot Kubuntu from the hard drive? What does "it will only load from the disc" mean? If it works from the CD, it should work installed to hard drive. You need to be more specific about what happened so we know what your problems are.

sorry, I am new to this - I was doing some research on what would work for this old laptop and came across xubuntu (also saw lubuntu which I'm downloading now)

the install seemed to go fine, then it asked for authentication for some reason, when I couldn't get past that I restarted .. that's when I get the "strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility"

With the lower amount of RAM (256), I would expect that Lubuntu or Linux Mint Isadora LXDE RC (Release Candidate) would work very well for you. Another good Linux Distro is Peppermint. It is based on LXDE as well, and primarily geared toward Cloud Apps (Internet Based), but allows you access to the Mint and Ubuntu Software Repositories.

Welcome to the World of Linux. You will grow to appreciate the flexibility.

Isadora LXDE went LTS(Long Term Support) over the Weekend.

    Just a simple update.

    Thanks,
