Facing problems being 1st day user

Just got my CD today and I was much excited about it . I just pop into my computer and idea was to dual boot with XP and gradually solo Ubuntu .

But it is a bit slow (for my old hardware Penntium III , 256 ramm )

Music player asks for add ins for everything i try to play (mp3 , flv, wmw etc)

I cant download those add ins as ubuntu does not let me install my modem
which is (CDMA 2000 fixed wireless phone made by ZTE china)
I have driver for it for xp but they dont work for ubuntu .
How can I install those add ins and my modem .
everything else is so cool about ubuntu .
    Regards,
    Asif

256 Mb of RAM is not really enough to run Ubuntu with a Gnome window manager.

I run Crunchbang 9, an Ubuntu derivative. (Crunchbang 10 is Debian Squeeze.)

Also check out Lubuntu (Ubuntu based on LXDE) and Xubuntu (Ubuntu based on Xfce)

Look at "Modest Spec or Barebones Installation of Ubuntu" - Modest Spec or Barebones Installation of Ubuntu and "Ubuntu Minimal Desktop " - Ubuntu Minimal Desktop - DennyHalim.com

Glad you've received your disk already from the Ubuntu folks. That was quicker than I thought you'd get it.

As for the speed on your machine, I remember several of us telling you that it would probably be rather slow when you first asked about running Ubuntu on it. You could try running a lighter weight desktop environment, or a simple window manager to get more speed.

Check this article for info on how to get any codecs that you might need for your media player:

I'm not familiar with the modem so can't offer up any suggestions on that.
