I read on the mint 9 website that is a lighter OS then ubuntu, is it even light enough to notice? Plus does mint 9 have all the hardware and software support of ubuntu?

mint is basically the same as ubuntu with a couple of gui changes. I haven't tried mint 9 yet but i've been running mint 8 with all the updates and there isn't much difference between mint and ubuntu. mint is based on ubuntu so that shouldn't be much of a surprise. all the hardware detection is pretty much the same.

I wouldn't call Mint "lighter." If anything, it's Ubuntu plus. They've taken the Ubuntu base and built their own GUI and a few useful tools on top of it. They have their own software menu for installing/uninstalling, a backup tool and a few other little touches.

As far as the hardware/software support, yes. Mint is upstream compatible with all the Ubuntu repositories.
