Were you using Ubuntus network manager?
You didn't write the old what down?I did not write the old one down
You can get network info with ifconfig, route -n commands. Not sure what you need?

if you are using a router, you have no need to modify the mac address anyway, so i'm not sure why you are even messing with it, and i would recommend against changing anything with the mac address, since that is some pretty advanced network stuff
if you have a wired connection and a router, you plug into the router and it should just work, wireless might need more configuration
you need to give us more information about your setup, it is difficult to know what exactly is your problem based on your initial and subsequent postings
