Ubuntu Remix?
I installed ubuntu remix on a net book for my wife and we both hate it, is there a way to have the regular ubuntu 10.04 interface without having to install ubuntu 10.04 desktop?

Hi DGrier!

I am not familiar with ubuntu remix but since you are already pursuing the ubuntu family you might want to give Mint a try. Just a suggestion though

You might want to go to distrowatch and look at EasyPeasy, Igelle, Kuki linux, Lubuntu, Meego, Moblin, Peppermint OS, or Teenpup. All are recommended for netbook systems. I don't have a netbook, but liked the look of EasyPeasy, Teenpup, and Peppermint. Happy hunting.

I have been using ubuntu on my dell studio and love it, just wish I could get the regular desktop look on the netbook.

I'm not familiar with the remix desktop, but if it has the Ubuntu core, you should be able to add the Gnome DE.

I've never the Ubuntu Netbook Edition, but you'd just need to install the desktop packages (assuming they aren't installed) and, if you want, remove the netbook specific packages. You should just be able to choose a normal old GNOME session from the login manager.
The metapackage for the default gnome desktop is called gnome-desktop-environment.
Code:sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment

The only reason to go with ubuntu netbook remix is if you want the different interface.
I have been using Ubuntu on a netbook for over a year now and from what I can see, there is absolutely ZERO performance difference between netbook remix and regular desktop. The only difference is the silly interface.
Unfortunately, there isn't a way -as far as I can tell - to get a completely working gnome desktop on netbook remix. Used to be able to do it at first but these last few releases didn't seem to support it.
Hope this helps

@DGrier
Unless you are really a novice, either go with the normal ubuntu install and then set all the desktop fonts to 8pt (system>appearance - I think) and autohide the panels or try eeebuntu or whatever other distro grabs you.
Else, install gnome from the system>admin menu.
It's not the distro that counts but the addons/feel/ease of use that counts. I'm really a suse user but play with most distros.
Hope this helps.

I'm with Nujini on this one. Give Mint Isadora LXDE a spin. I think you will like what you see.
If not, go to Peppermint OS. Another LXDE. It's pretty sweet, and designed around Cloud Computing.
peppermintos(.)com/]Peppermint | Linux OS (Gotta be close to 15
)
It has a little bling, and is another Ubuntu/ Mint Derivitive.
Good Luck,
Dave
