    Hello and welcome!

I've not tried Ubuntu 10.04 yet, but do use the same modem and it's worked with every distro that I've tried so far, so yes it is supported. Note that it's more likely to be an issue with your NIC than the modem itself.

I'm using Linksys EG1032 v3 Instant Gigabit D. It works fine in XP.

I believe that card should use the r8169 realtek module, but Linux tries using the sk98lin module for it by default. You might be able to remove the sk98lin module so that it uses the other module instead. Maybe someone else that is using that card will chime in with some help.

It couldn't hurt anything, a simple reboot will make everything just the way it was before.
    Code:
    sudo modprobe -r modulename

I tried to remove sk98lin, didn't work. I got the reply that it could not be found.
Does it matter that I'm using the downloaded live cd. I haven't loaded ubuntu to the hd yet.

Try googling Linksys EG1032 v3 Linux module and you should get some hits that might help you to get past this issue. If it were me, I'd go for a new or used NIC that is more Linux compatible, but you should be able to get your current card to work with some extra effort. I was really hoping someone that has one would reply with the exact steps you need to take to get it going.
