    hello all,
    I'm absolut beginner and have stupidly changed the owner of 'etc' to www-data(gid33) - now I have no permission to it and not allowed to change it back to root. what should I do?

    Hello and welcome!

    I don't know if it will work, but you could try booting a liveCD such as Parted Magic and change permissions on it from there. Let us know how it goes.
