    can't get photos off camera

Hello all – after 20 years as a hardened Windows man, I decided to try Linux, and installed Ubuntu. Good bits – I really like it, it takes about a tenth the time to boot and lots of other things. And it's not Microsfot. Bad bits – various hardware-related issues, and I just can't seem to get any support. I've posted messages on the official Ubuntu forum, but nobody responds.

So I have the feeling that, for all but expert users, Linux (or maybe just Ubuntu!) isn't there yet... I'm not exactly an amateur – I repair computers (mostly Windows problems) for a living, and can't think of anything I don't know how to do in that environment. When I DO get an obscure issue, I go on the Microsfot forums, and almost always get a fast and courteous reply.

I think it's a bit sad that I'm utterly cynical about Microsoft, but find a friendly and helpful environment to move around in there; am totally behind the Linux objective, but seem to be looking into a clique I don't belong to...

My most pressing current problem is that I can't get photos off my camera. I have no driver for it, so can't simply plug its cable into a USB port, and drag and drop. My laptop has a card reader, but to get Ubuntu to recognise that, I have to put the SD card in, then reboot the machine!

Can anyone help me at all, or should I go back to Windows for another few years till Linux is ready for normal use?

    Thanks...

Well, if that camera behaves like a usb storage,
then it *is* as easy as plugging it in.

But if not, some info is required.
Like the name of your camera and the USB id.
You can get the later by issuing as root or via sudo:
    Code:
    lsusb
And are you sure nothing happens, when you insert a sd card?
Please insert one and paste the output of the following commands (again: sudo or as root) in CODE tags:
    Code:
    dmesg
    fdisk -l
    mount
You must always face the curtain with a bow.

How did you DO that??? I plugged it in to follow your instructions, and it !)£&@@(£! came up as a disk this time, just like Windows!!!

I swear by Almighty Bog that has never happened before.

OK, I'm going to try the SD card on its own now. Now THAT won't work.

    Hah! Thought not. Got you.

Thanks for being so helpful though

    Bears repeating:

Ummm... OK, will give it a go – if I can Google what a “code tag” is!

See how hard it is for the uninitiated...

No, can't figure out what code tags are I'm afraid, so entered the commands one after the other:

    Code:
    roger@pavilion:~$ mount

    /dev/sda5 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro)

proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)

none on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)

none on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw)

none on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw)

none on /sys/kernel/security type securityfs (rw)

none on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,mode=0755)

none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=0620)

none on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev)

none on /var/run type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755)

none on /var/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)

none on /lib/init/rw type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755)

    binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)

    gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/roger/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon (rw,nosuid,nodev,user=roger)

    /dev/sda1 on /media/36984CC960784648 type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions)

    roger@pavilion:~$
    Does that help?

Thanks... but that seems to be about how to used HTML-type tags in postings, whereas I think I've been asked to somehow put code in a terminal window? Is it the same thing?

    Sorry, I'm really confused

And... it won't let me quote your entire message, as it contains HTML, and apparently I'm not allowed to use that here yet!

I don't believe you are reading the instructions that you are being given carefully enough. You need to run the commands in a terminal, but then post the output here, using code tags, so that the output is easier to read for those trying to help you.

OK, I'll try harder... please understand that this is difficult for me as I'm unfamiliar with the terminology. The commands I have to enter are also referred to as code, which I think is what confused me.

    Right. I type sudo dmesg:
