Hello and welcome to the forums!
To get some ideas where to start you can check this poll regarding "favorite distro for older computer hardware" as voted by our membership:

Regarding dual-booting, it's usually a very good way to familiarize yourself with Linux in a practical manner.oz

My kids have systems very similar to the one you are showing.
I run Mint Isadora LXDE on one. (Small Footprint 192mb RAM and will run on less).
Currently I run Xubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 on the other one.
Both are old Workstations
1.2Ghz Processor's (1 Dell, 1 Compaq)
512MB RAM
40GB Hard Drive
I'm a Mint Fan personally, and only the one Compaq is running anything else (Xubuntu.. and Yes, I know Mint is an Ubuntu Derivitive. I like the Mint Polish.
)
Peppermint is another good one based on LXDE as well. It has a lot of Cloud Based Applications, but will still give you access to Ubuntu/ Mint Repositories.
Mint Isadora XFCE RC is available now as well.
Good Luck and Enjoy,
Dave

It looks like you have enough ram to run most distro's. If you go to distrowatch.com and scroll down the right side, it will show the top 100 distros. Download the ones that appeal to you, or start at the top and work down, and try the live CD's to see what you feel comfortable with. Ubuntu, Mint, or PCLinuxOS are all good choices to try. Have fun and hop around to different distro's before you settle down with just one.

i suggest you use ubuntu 10.04, i find it the most stable and efficient linux distro. A dual boot with windows xp will give you the best of both, Linux and windows. however if you have a small hard disk capacity (less than 60GB) go for single boot with Ubuntu.

I would suggest to check this poll and try any of distro listed there. Most of distros listed in the poll will work fine in your machine.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
