How do i Install Programs from the internet?
Hey everybody,
I Just Installed Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit edition on My HP laptop (DV9408nr: Amd turion x2 2.2GHZ processor, 2GB ram, 500GB HDD, Nvidia Geforce series integrated chip, Broadcom wireless a/b/g on board) about a week ago, and everything was going okay, until i wanted to install VMware Player to run a couple of Virtual desktops within linux, so that i would not have to put a dual-boot on my system to use windows applications, or to try out the new Google Chrome OS. the problem being that when i downloaded the install file from VMware's site (Vmwareinstall.bundle), it would not install the file. i read somewhere that the installer files are supposedly supposed to carry a different extension, my question is this: how do i open/convert the file provided by Vmware to a proper install extension that will work with my build? please be as detailed as possible, and remember that while i may be an expert in the windows environment, i know very little about this linux environment. (but i was logged into the root account when i tried to install.)

I'm not an Ubuntu user but occasionally use Mint so I'm not that familiar with it. I have a link below to the Ubuntu site which gives a pretty detailed explanation on how to download and install vmware for Ubuntu 10.04. Take a look at it:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VMware/Server
I've not used vmware myself but I imagine they have a windows version. This site should explain which file to look for to download so you can check to see you got the correct one.

Remember that in Linux extensions don't matter, they're just there for humans to be able to see what the file type is. Linux can figure out what the file type is by looking in the header of the file
For installing VMWare I would look at one of the many tutorials that are available such as the one yancek linked to as they will be in much more detail than anyone is going to go into hereLinux User #453176
