    HELP! ubuntu not starting!

help! i have a double boot configuration with ubuntu 10.04 and windows xp
when i start ubuntu the 'ubuntu' screen comes but the login screen does not appear. i tried to open ubuntu in recovery mode but it said

usr contains a file system with errors
    mountall: event failed

ubt contains a file system with errors
usr contains a file system with errors
    mountall: event failed
    home: unattached inode 954097
    home: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY
    RUN fsck MANUALLY
mountall: fsck /home[300] terminated with status 4
    mountall: filesystem has errors: /home

i've tried using older kernels also
just for info: my home and usr directories are in separate partitions & i've named my ubuntu partition as 'ubt'.
i edited grub.conf file before this happened ( to comment out older kernel boot options) but grub is working porperly and i am able to boot into windows without any issues.

Well, as it says "Run fsck manually", that would be a good place to start. You will need a rescue CD; I believe your Ubuntu installation disk will serve that purpose. Boot from it, open a terminal and run the fsck program on each partition that has given you errors - without trying to mount them. Hopefully this will clean up the filesystem errors that are giving you grief.
