ok i need some help im new to the linux os i am still trying to learn it and im trying to install a 9800gt nvidia graphics card on my ubuuntu i have been reading forums for the last 5 days and still no luck i managed to do a install and it is giving me the following errors
distribution pre install script failed
install failed /var/log/nvidia-installer.log
unable to load kernal module 'nvidia,ko,
any help to get this issue fixed would be much appreciated i am trying to run compiz

Are you saying the normal driver install routine using Ubuntu repositories is not working for you? Or the driver in repo is too old for your card?

i downloaded the driver from nvidia and used
control+alt+f1
cd downloads
sudo /etc/init./gdm stop
sudo sh ./nvidia driver.run
it ran the install and gave me the error msgs along the way i have only used linux for the last 5 days so must of it is new to me

the driver is NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.35.run. and im running a 64 bit 6 core amd with a 9800gt nvidia card

Doesn't Hardware Drivers option in System - Administration menu list Nvidia Proprietary Driver?
Which version of Ubuntu are you using?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

ok but once that one is installed i go into system preference and appearence visual effects and try to click on extras it gives me this message
desktop effects could not be enabled

i think it is ubuntu 9.10 i just downloaded it off wubi

Code:lspci | grep -i vga grep -i driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

nevermind it is ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx
