Have you tried same files in any other machine/OS? Are you sure those files are not corrupted?
In case files are not corrupted, try gxine. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Have you tried to play .dat file with gxine? Install it using package manager, Synaptic or apt-get.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
