    There is always a chance for data loss when you manipulate partitions so it's always a good idea to have a backup before doing so. That said, I've never personally lost data when working partitions, but I tend to be very careful in the steps that taken.

    The Parted Magic LiveCD is a good utility disk for working with partitions.
