Will there be problems after updates?
I am on Mint 9(Which is basiclly the same thing as 10.04) and I was wondering if updates to the kernel, grub, etc. would mess with my windows partition. The only reason I'm concerned about this is because I've heard numerous problems with grub, windows, and partitions after updates were done to the system. I know you can't do these things with Wubi, but I'm currently using Mint on a seperate partition with grub.
Will anything happen to Windows, grub, or Mint if I go ahead with these updates? Thanks.

There is always a chance for something to break when you add or remove packages from a system.
GRUB2 that's now being used on the latest versions of Ubuntu is still rather experimental in its development and sometimes the devs will change the way things work, causing some systems to break. If you have a good system backup on hand, you can be more experimental with your system and if you should break it, you can simply restore the system from the backup and be right back to where you were before the breakage within a few minutes. Some good Linux imaging apps would include Clonezilla, FSArchiver, PartClone, and PartImage.
Unfortunately, the only way you can decide on whether or not to upgrade based on the experiences of others is if they have exactly the same distribution, hardware, and applications installed as you. I've been using Linux for more than 10 years, but tend to be more careful with certain upgrades, such as those including new kernels and bootloaders.oz

Adding to ozar's comments . . .

Mint-9 is the same thing to Lucid Lynx as a Buick is to a base-model Chevrolet, as many will attest.
But why worry about Windows, especially since it is on a separate partition? Instead of doing the thing -- Pick and choose! The next URL clarifies what I am saying -- DonsDeals: What's new in Linux Mint 9 Isadora - Linux MintPHP Code:sudo apt-get -f dist-upgrade

Also, under Aptitude, the use of "safe-upgrade" after "update" is a better way to go, in my opinion than "dist-upgrade"
Take it with a grain of salt, but Aaron Toponce : Aptitude vs Apt-Get makes a valid point.
- 08-06-2010 #4Nothing will go wrong unless you have Nvidia or ATI Graphics Card? You might face blank screen on reboot because one has to re-install proprietary driver on each kernel upgrade. That's very easy to fix. Will anything happen to Windows, grub, or Mint if I go ahead with these updates?
Other than Graphics Driver, you won't face any problem. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
