Did you install hplip with synaptic or apt-get?

Just from experience, it sounds like a problem with the printer itself. Usually, when you are not getting the right colors on print jobs, it's because either the color or black cartridge is out. Try running hptoolkit which should be in your menu. There is a tab there that will let you know if the cartridges are running low or are out. There might be other useful info in hptoolkit if the cartridges aren't the problem.

If you haven't printed in a few months the jets could be clogged. I think there is even a utility in hptoolkit that allows for clearing the jet heads too.

ya i tried everything that was there. Cleaning them, aligning them, and even printing test pages, oddly enough i could only print test pages that tested the driver and not diagnostic pages
