How nice can I make my Ubuntu look?

I'm trying to make Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) look as nice as possible. I'm running it on an old computer with only 384MB of RAM and a 1Ghz processor. I usually use it for web browsing but have lots of Tabs open, and sometimes have a calculator and/or a notepad. Because of the demand I put on my system, I don't expect it to look to fancy, but I do want to add a bit to it. Thank You.

Is that with the Gnome desktop? I just recently upgraded from a P3 500 to a P3 1.1 Ghz 384 Meg ram laptop, and used an LXDE desktop because I didn't think Ubuntu Gnome would run on those limited resources. How does yours run?
As to fancy looks, ubuntu is pretty easy to change wallpapers and themes in, it all depends on what you want it to look like. With only 384 MB Ram, 3d might be a stretch though.

Here is a link to ubuntu upgrades, see ubuntu part2. LinuxFileSystem.com
3d desktops are: Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Advanced 3D Desktop | LinuxFileSystem.com This shows what can be done to make it fancy.

If you are running Gnome, check out gnome-look.org for some eye-candy.

There is also a kde-look.org and an xfce-look.org if you are running one of those.

I'm pretty sure it uses Gnome. It's a little slow, but I'm running it off of a live DVD, on a really old drive, so that's probably the reason. But I'm installing it now, typing this on my other computer.

Thanks for the reply Coke. Live disks generally run slower than installed, let us know how the installed version runs.

install compiz configuration manager (ccm)throug ubuntu software center and ubuntu tweak (google it) for some wonderfull desktop effects. you can also install screenlet manager through ubuntu tweak for vista like widgets and docky(mac-like dock) through ubuntu software center. wallpapers and themes can be changed from system>>preferences>>appearance.

I hit an error when installing it. Either the disk wasn't burned properly, my drive lens is dirty, the disk is dirty, the drive is broken, or the drive got to hot. I'm gonna get a drive lens cleaner soon, find some lint free cloths to clean the DVD, and some compressed air to clean all the dust out of the inside. It's a pretty old computer so there is A LOT of dust inside. If none of that works I'll get a new DVD, and try it with an external drive.

It may be that 384MB RAM is too little for the live CD installer. You might try the alternate installer.

I'm pretty sure you can use it down to only 256MB of RAM. I'm installing it from a disk I got from Linux Identity Starter. I can't burn my own CDs, which is why I bought it.
