Question [SOLVED] Screen freaks out during 10.04 install

    Hello.
This is my first attempt to touch Linux...
I received an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS CD, and trying to install it on a machine that now has Win XP on it (I don't care to dump Windows on this machine).

I boot from the CD, and after some 5 minutes of red and white dots running below an "Ubuntu" logo, the screen freezes with a "rain" of colored pixels covering most of it (black ribbons on top and bottom).

This is an on-board VGA card, works perfect with Windows.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Mor

Hello and welcome to the forums!

This sounds like a graphics issue. I'd recommend trying the "alternate installer" (text version of the installer) if you haven't done so already. It usually works fine when the liveCD installer fails. You can download it from the Ubuntu downloads page.

    Thanks, oz.

Question is, whether this is only an installation issue, or whether the Ubuntu shell/UI will not work for my current hardware configuration.

I couldn't say for sure if it will work, or not. The best approach is to try it and see what happens. The alternate installer works every time for me, whereas the liveCD installer does not.

    Thumbs up Problem fixed

    Hey oz.

    I tried the alternate installer.
The installation process went pretty smooth.
Upon rebooting after installation - same problem.
After the red dots under the "ubuntu" logo run for a minute - screen freezes covered with colored "rain".

Eventually, I switched to a PCI adapter instead of using the on-board one - problem solved.

    Thanks!
