    Choppy sound in Ubuntu 10.04

    Hi,

Since I upgraded to 10.04 (from 9.10) I've been running into trouble with my wireless headset. Ever since the upgrade, I've had issues with the audio being very choppy (it sounds kind of like static) through the headset while listening to anything from an mp3 to a youtube video.

The two things I've noticed about it are that it is ONLY when using the headset, and the audio is fine running through the built in speakers. The other thing is that it only seems to happen when there is something going on on screen (for example, with a youtube video, scrolling up and down a page makes it much worse, as does having the video embedded in another page, while minimizing the page eliminates problem; or while listening to music, while the visualizer is running, it has problems, but when I get rid of it, it's fine.)

I have a somewhat old Dell Inspiron 6400 with 2 GB ram and 2 Intel core 2 T7400s, each at 2.16 GHz if that helps. I'm not sure how to check what sound card I have (still fairly new to linux).

If you need any more info, just let me know!

    Thanks in advance!

whats your sound chip? post output of lspci | grep -i audio

also, check sound levels with alsamixer and try adjusting them, see if that helps at all

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)

I tried messing with the levels in alsamixer, but it only showed bars to adjust playback level, and microphone level, both of which had no effect on the choppyness.

Just to clarify, this is a USB wireless headset, and I needed to hit F6 in alsamixer to change the selected sound card (from "HDA Intel" to "Plantronics Wireless Audio"), so I'm not sure whether it uses the built in sound card at all.

I tried the above command again to see if it would give me different info once I changed the sound card in alsamixer but it still displayed the Intel chip.

Alright, I've reverted to Karmic Koala (Lucid was giving me dozens of other problems as well) and the Headset works fine now.

    Thanks for the help!
