Crashing problems with ubuntu 9.04 + old laptop

Is there way to update the 9.04 system more stable? Sometimes my ubuntu 9.04 freezes totally while for example surfing.

I'm quite new with linux and i have to tell that ubuntu 9.04 was the only version wich i got working on my laptop(fujitsu siemens amilo). 10.10 didn't install and hardware didn't work with 9.10.

Otherwise everythings works very fine. I think the problem might be the torrent - download software that makes the system freeze sometimes. Also might be some issue with firefox.

    Thanks,
    kurremise

    Post your machine's specs here.
Which Graphics Card do you have?

Post output of these commands :
    Code:
    df -h
    grep -i driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    lspci | grep -i vga
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

My graphic card is some ATI radeon card..

allmost 1 gig ram and Intel Celeron processor.

    df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda1 224G 4,4G 209G 3% /
    tmpfs 943M 0 943M 0% /lib/init/rw
    varrun 943M 108K 943M 1% /var/run
    varlock 943M 0 943M 0% /var/lock
    udev 943M 140K 943M 1% /dev
    tmpfs 943M 88K 943M 1% /dev/shm
    lrm 943M 2,4M 941M 1% /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/volatile

    ----

    grep -i driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf

    ---- nothing ---

    lspci | grep -i vga
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RC410 [Radeon Xpress 200M]

    ----

Could install ATI catalyst center, a linux version, but i don't know would it help... When i have more time i'll get to solving this...

    And one more thing!
I plugged in Canon EOS camera, but i cannot "read" it with linux. In windows i can just normally go and copy paste all the images to hard-drive. Linux detecs the camera and see's that it is Canon EOS something but cannot open it... Some error message occurs "cannot lock camera" or something.
