This will be a shot in the dark recommendation as I don't have a Sony Viao or run Ubuntu 10.04 on my Netbooks. Both EEEPCs. My touchpad did not work on my EEEPC 701 SD after I upgraded my kernels (2.6.34 and 2..6.35) in AntiX 8.5 (which is basically Debian like Ubuntu).
What I did to fix my touchpad without editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf was
I fixed it by making a text file in (use gksu nautilus in terminal for you Ubuntu users)
Named itCode:/etc/modprobe.d
whiich left meCode:psmouse.conf
typed in itCode:/etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf
ReebootCode:options psmouse proto=imps
Now tap works in Liqourix Kerne and custom kernel l on EEEPC 701SD. Can't say if this will work for you. You can always delete /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf if it doesn't work for you.
For sound. I had most sound working except for mic in my alsamixer. I ended up having to edit
to fix that issue also. You will have to google your model Laptop including Ubuntu /etc/modprobe.d to see what you can find to set sound parameters in alsamixer for your gear.Code:/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
