Newbie to Linux, WiFi Driver problems 8191SE
Hi all,
Recently I decided I'd put off for too long (maybe too late) installing some sort of Linux installation and start to get to grips with this side of computing, I started in computing 32 years ago but I'm ashamed to say have never done any Linux or its many flavours.
So, I figured I would install Backtrack as it has a range of security software and Im taking a degree course at the moment and thinking of security as an option.
So far I have partitioned off 25 gig and installed backtrack and all is great so far, however the Wifi isnt working as the realtek 8191SE isn't in the drivers list.
I went over to Realtek and downloaded the correct driver from the site,
rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0017.0705.2010.tar
followed the read me inside to install it but it has not worked for some reason,.
I followed what it said namely the following,
When I enter "iwconfig" nothing shows for wlan0Code:You can enter top-level directory of driver and execute follwing command to Compile, Installation, or uninstall the driver: 0. Change to Super User sudo su 1. Compile driver from the source code make 2. Install the driver to the kernel make install reboot 3. uninstall driver
If I enter in ifconfig wlan0 up then it shows as wlan0 but still doesnt work.
and this is where I am now,
Can anyone spare a little time to show me where I went wrong?
thanks
Phil

Sorry nearly forgot, I copied over the Firmware into the correct folder namely, /lib/firmware

Please post the output of
andCode:/usr/sbin/lspci -vnn
You may want to redirect dmesg to a text file for easier handling, since it's quite long.Code:dmesg
Post using code tags, please.Code:dmesg > dmesg.txt

Thanks in advance Reed for taking the time, much appreciated.
The /sbin/lspci -vnn see attached.
The dmesg see attached. I had to zip it as it spat out an error on the file size, 34kb?

That's because I should read over what I'm typing before hitting post. Should be /usr/sbin/lspci -vnn. Changed in the original. You may not need the full path, ie, just do lspci -vnn, but I'm not too familiar with Backtrack and some distros don't put /usr/sbin in the user accounts $PATH.
There's not much in dmesg. Can you do
and then post the tail end of dmesgCode:sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
And what does this show?Code:dmesg | tail
Does Backtrack use sudo for root priviliges? If not log in to the shell as root before the above and ditch the sudo part.Code:sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
Code:su - ifconfig wlan0 up dmesg | tail iwlist wlan0 scan

It appears we have a signal! Great!
I'm not versed with the commands yet (reference would be useful)
but I can see my Router however I need tackle that next.
Thats if what I see here (marked) Fearless - that is mine!

Can I just say I am relatively new to Linux, I have to say the challenge for some of the more simple "normal applications etc etc" can sometimes be a bit off putting, but it does give one the opportunity to use one's grey matter. I recently stumbled at the 1st hurdle in setting up a usb wifi key and was helped along the way and eventually a "penny dropped " and I got it working.. I have since however had a couple of problems and so of the characterisitics were very similar. I shut down my system in a "hurry" and on both occasions I was actually using aprogram called "VUSE" and for what ever reason the next time I came to " fireup " my system I could not reconnect to the net at all. I was repeatedly getting bad password message carefully re-entering the password. I read through absolutely remes of "so called Fixes" and acres of terminal data to enter to fix the problem most of which incidently didnt make any difference. I had copied down all the Router info by hand after having experienced the proble the 1st time. The usual late night till 3 am followed with various efforts and reading about bugs etc. I could at any time through out connect by wire and ethernet, and also had other computers on the "other" operating system. Finally in despseration I accessed my router and began checking My previously written down information. Now as much as I hate to admit it and hopefully Im not insulting anyones intelligence it really was a simple case of an error on the pasword key by one letter. So in conclusion I would just like to stress that sometimes as good as we think we are a little old fashioned just check everything goes a long way rather than jumping all over the net and trying "half baked solutions and patches" This how ever does not explain why I lost it except to say that VUSE was in the frame on both occasions....
