    hi there. when i am booting my ubuntu 10.04 i boots into tty1. then i have to start gdm manually
    Sudo etc/init.d/gdm start. and then it works fine. how do i make my 64bit desktop edition boot into gdm automatically and permanently?

    Check the contents of /etc/init/gdm.conf file. Default runlevel should be [016].

    thank yoy i checked the file and it was allright. i dont know what went wrong it have happend three times before. perhaps do to update some how. ille rember the init folder. thanks

    If I understand you correctly, I'm having a very similare problem.

    It all started when I installed nvidia drivers. Before that autoloin worked perfectly.

    Not all the time, but almost all the time, on boot I get dropped to a VT login. Then I issue startx and everythings boots normally.

    Timing issues somewhere's, just don't know what to look for.

    If your using nVida drivers, you might do as I did to fix your problem. I installed the drivers from nVida web page instead of using Ubuntu nvidia drivers. That fixed my GDM not starting.
