Trouble with Optimus Enabled Laptop
I recently purchased a laptop which uses Nvidia Optimus Technology (awesome, when its supported by the os). By the way, if anyone knows a way to get Optimus working, or even just tell it to use igpu when booting on battery power or dgpu when on ac, please inform me. Anyway, things were great when I first set ubuntu up and it was using nouveau, granted I could only use dgpu. I then installed the nvidia-current driver. Upon restart, I got the ubuntu logo with some trippy green around its edges (igpu. When things work, it looks normal once dgpu is used). My laptop boots with igpu, then switches to dgpu when it senses graphical load. It switches immediately with ubuntu. As soon as laptop switches from igpu to dgpu (happens during boot after ubuntu logo), screen goes black. I then removed nvidia and went back to nouveau to find I had the same problem. Finally, I remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf and its backup. Lo and behold, things work. What is aggravating is this, It wasn't that xorg.conf was wrong, any xorg.conf brings this issue. I tried to change some synaptics settings with an xorg.conf, but the problem resurfaced. Is there some workaround? I know there's the whole xorg.conf.d folder deal with ubuntu 10.04. maybe I should try to put my synaptics settings there somewhere and avoid xorg.conf altogether? By the way, all I'm trying to do is enable two finger middle click (can't use firefox effectively without it
) Also, is there an advantage to the nvidia driver? I'm using nouveau now and accelerated graphics work! If there is an advantage for nvidia, maybe someone can shed some light on getting it working. Thanks ahead of time!
igpu = integrated graphics
dgpu = dedicated graphics
