Could you please give as a little more information about what's your system setup?
Can you ping foreign hosts on the console? What does ifconfig say? Can you ping your router? Which network card are you using? etc. etc.
That would help us identifying your problem but without we can't help you.

    Hello and Welcome!

What he means is... what else have you tested or tried?

Can you ping an address? or your router?
    Open a terminal and do
    Code:
    ping www.google.com
Does it timeout or give a reply?
    In the same terminal, type
    Code:
    ifconfig
    and hit <enter>
This will tell you if you have an IP address.
And finally... what network card are you using? Are you wireless or wired?

If you don't know what card it is, in the terminal type
    Code:
    lspci
    and post the output here.

    What is this terminal?

And to give some background on this computer, before I had ubuntu on it, it was running xp and got a virus so that the only web browsing application it could use was firefox. Then I installed Ubuntu.

    Welcome to the forums!

The terminal is a place to enter text commands. Look for it in your apps menu, or you might have an icon for a terminal in one of your panels running across the screen.

If you are 'connected', then you should be surfing the internet... something has gone awry and we need some info to be able help you.

Since you found the terminal, and managed to get those commands put in correctly, do them one more time. When you get the output from those commands, just copy/paste the output and report back with it.
