    Welcome to the forums!

I'm totally unfamiliar with the 1240U, but if it's a scanner like the Perfection 1250U and it's compatible with Linux, manufacturers sometimes bury drivers deep into a sub-directory on the CD that come with their products.

Otherwise, you might be able to use the drivers found on the Epson site for the 1250U (found under the "Other" category for drivers):

Epson Perfection 1250, Overview - Technical Support - Epson America, Inc.

If that doesn't work, perhaps someone that owns the 1240U will reply with some driver info for you.

There are CUPS drivers for Epson printers, but they are from Avasys in Japan. I use them on several different distributions and they generally work well. They are the "official" Epson Linux support site. Anyway, here is the link: Linux Driver | AVASYS CORPORATION

Oops. I was thinking printer, not scanner. Doh! I have a Perfection 4490 that works well with the Epson iscan drivers. I am also able to use my document feeder without difficulty. They are also available on the Avasys site I provided the link for.
