How do I get rid off my old firefox plug-ins and add-ons??
Recently one of my 8.04 updates included a Firefox update that is causing my computer to freeze up and overheat
on occasion when I am forced to use my Firefox browser!
When it happens I have to unplug my computer because even the force quit
does not work when this happens.
Is there a simple way to get rid of all of my old Firefox plug-ins and add ons??
Thanks!!Linux registered user # 414321

You can rename the hidden .mozilla folder found in your /home folder to something like .mozillaOLD the way you've done before, then start Firefox and allow all the configuration folders/files to rebuild themselves. Then, you can reclaim your bookmarks from the renamed .mozilla folder before deleting it.

Oxf, I do not know which version of Firefox was installed onto my computer during the second last ubuntu 8.0.4 update but I started having problems right after it took place.
I do not normally use firefox for Internet browsing, I use Seamonkey and Konqueror!
However when I save articles for reading or printing to my desktop and I later click those articles " Firefox " opens them by default and that is when i first experienced the freezing up and overheating of my computer.
Force quit would not work and I could smell the electrical overheating so I had to pull out the plug to my computer. After that the force quit would stop what was happening as long as I was off line.
I now have to use my Firefox browser for my MyWay email because the new owners have changed their email service so that you can only read the bodies of your email by using Firefox.
I am also a member of the Ubuntu Network and their new Wordpress site can only be accessed on my machine by using firefox. Yesterday I clicked a link on the U.N.
the page opened up all right but when it finished loading my computer froze up on the page and began overheating and I had to pull the plug again.
I still have my suse 10 os on my machine that has an older version of firefox on it that does not give me any problems when I visit the U.N. website.
I figured that some part of my old Ubuntu 8.0.4 versions of firefox containing add on and plug ins was in conflict with the new updated firefox and I started this thread to see if anyone knew an easy way to get rid of the old plug-ins because I am a computer illiterate.
To be safe now I use Galeon or Epiphany to open the saved items on my desktop.
Having this problem makes me nervous because I know that it not good to have my computer overheating.Linux registered user # 414321

No that doesn't sound good at all! It sounds like your CPU is running full blast. I think Ozar's suggestion of renaming the .Mozilla folder and creating a new profile is a first step. although that didn't work for me
I can't be sure my problem is identical to yours but there are some similarities. Also Googling around does pull up other cases of this happening. With my problem it's definately linked with the Firefox (3.6.
that was installed by default with Ubuntu 10.04. It does at times seem to be triggered by certain websites I visit though not all the time. When it happens it can be very bad loosing all keyboard/mouse control and even display.
That said I'm not convinced there's not a hardware component to this as well. I have the identical installation on my other PC and also installed it on a friends PC and it never happens on those. My next step is to try another browser for a while and see what happens. Of course today's been a good day and its not happened at all which makes the diagnosis more difficult!Ubuntu Lucid 10.10
