Which GRUB ?
Running Ubuntu 10. and that should mean that GRUB 2 is running.
From a terminal:
glene77is@glene77is-desktop:~$ grub-install -v
grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97)
glene77is@glene77is-desktop:~$
It says the Old Grub is running.
What did I miss ?
In Menu.lst there is this group of code:
title Chainload into GRUB 2
root 786fbe13-deea-447a-b671-b8e8c6b76f30
kernel /boot/grub/core.img

I haven't used Grub2 but the link below is a tutorial on Grub2 specific to Ubuntu which should help. It references 9.10 but I doubt there is much if any difference for 10.04. Worth a read.

Really interesting reading.
The question was "WHY" the system reports the old Grub,
when we both know that Ubuntu 10 uses Grub2.
So, I have one computer setup for learning/tinkering.
Right now, I've put Knoppix (old Grub) and Ubuntu (Grub2) on, and have had Puppy (Grub failed on 5 installs), just to tinker, modify the scripts.
Ubuntu Grub2 overwrites all.
Has been interesting tracing the boot sequence/methodology.

You can find what version of GRUB you are using with this command:
Code:grub-install -v

Is it a fresh installation or upgrade from earlier version?
Post the output of this
Code:ls -l /boot/grub
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Casper,
I do see the grub.cfg, and if I alter a title, then it shows the alteration.
So, I am certain that grub2 is running.
Is menu.lst running first, then pointing to grub2?
Capture as you requested:

Something is wrong in GRUB Config files.
I asked you in my last post too. Is it a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 or an upgrade from earlier version?
If Ubuntu is using GRUB2 then it doesn't need menu.lst file and doesn't use its config.
Edit title lines menu.lst file and check if new title lines appear at startup. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Casper,
I think I have a fresh install from the new OSdisk.com CD.
Have several systems setup,
(1) one for tinkering, (2) one for work, (3) several large USB HD for backups.
Could be that this machine has an UpGrade, and maybe that's a problem.

However, Checking menu.lst, I find this code :

## hiddenmenu
# Hides the menu by default (press ESC to see the menu)
#hiddenmenu # mod to show menu

title Chainload into GRUB 2

kernel /boot/grub/core.img

I never see the title lines from menu.lst.

Have modified parts of Grub.cfg already, as a tracer.
Trace shows OK.
It is obvious that the sys is running through grub2.

These mods to grub.cfg show nicely.

My question is about WHY this command shows the old grub ?
I enter from the terminal:
glene77is@glene77is-desktop:~$ grub-install -v
grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97)

I have no problems doing a format and fresh install, again.
I find these things interesting.
Thanks.

Casper,
I am glad to find someone who is interested and qualified in Linux operations.
Thank you for your response.
Hope I caught you before breakfast.
Need to do an adendum to the previous post.

There is no emergency here,
but my professional and academic curiosity is piqued!

A better, more sequential history of installs, as best as I remember, follows:
A month ago, I re-installed Windows XP, which wiped out my Linux Ubuntu.
The total re-format of the entire disk is the MS method. I expected to install Linux Ubuntu into some higher count sda() maybe 3 or 5 along with swap and unallocated areas. I expected to be able to read various files to see methods of scripting. I also installed to a #2 computer, Puppy failed, Knoppix is OK, Linux Ubuntu 9 was OK, 10 was OK, Mint was OK. I wiped the #2 computer and reinstalled Knoppix (sda1) OK, and then Ubuntu (sda5) OK. Grub2 located both OS. I located grub.cfg in Ubuntu/root/grub, modified the title/color OK, everything works.
Then on my #1 computer, I installed the fresh MS_XP, and then installed the fresh Linux Ubunutu 9, which was later upgraded to 10 I think. I commonly purchase live-CD from OSdisks.com for Puppy, Knoppix, Ubuntu, PartEdMagic, but have downloaded ISO files and burned good Live-CDs to use recovering on other people's computers.
Ubuntu 9 installed a grub2 and it located both OS, as shown in the boot-up list, and pointed to itself (sda5), wherein I located the grub.cfg and made some decorative mods as a tracer.
Per my interest, I researched all I can find about grub and booting methods, and the different approaches used by DOS, Linux Ubuntu 9/10, and MS-Windows. I found references to Windows applications controlling ownership by writing tags into the Master Boot Record (potential problems in that as that is where the grubs begin their code).
Then I started exporing the files associated with the grub method.
I wanted to see more of the scripting, as examples of bash scripts.
Bought a book on Linux command-line usage, reads like an old Dos 3.0 manual.
Spent a year working to a SCO Unix server, with FoxPro 2.6 in SQL applications.
I spent a dozen years designing commercial database programs in FoxPro, but very little in TC script and none in BASH script, so I want to get my feet wet.
(!)
That is when I found the menu.lst and the 'chain' command pointing to grub2.
I modified the menu.lst, but saw no effect.
I modified the grub.cfg and saw the decorative effect, such as color change.
(!)

Thanks for your interest.
It seems that you don't want to let anything escape your attention.
The answer will come around eventually, as there is No Magic!
