    Hello and Welcome.
Do you mean that you got a new drive, plugged it in and when you boot the machine it does not boot? Is that correct?
Did you check the jumpers on the new drive? Set to slave or master?

probably the disk order is changed when you added the new disk

you should make sure grub is set to boot using disk UUID instead of raw device name in order to alleviate the issue

also check bios boot order and make sure you don't have new disk to be booted first somehow

two sata hard drives. The primary drive boots and computer functions but unable to activate new hard drive. I am able to access files on second hard drive which has windows XP. It may have something to slave or master setting. I'll check, thank you.

Two WD Caviar Blue 320GB 7200RPM hard drives. 8-pin (no master/slave settings) Could that be the problem?

What do you mean by activate new drive? How are you accessing files of second hard drive?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

After I boot into ubuntu the second hard drive(windows XP) shows up in "computer" and I can access files but I am allowed no option to boot into this hard drive.
